Smartphones – the End of the Personal Computer?

As the number of people who own mobile phones that can perform similar functions to a computer – or smartphones – continues to rise, computer companies are starting to worry about the future of laptops and PCs.

According to Tomi Ahonen, a former executive at Nokia, their fears may well be justified. In an interview with The Guardian last year, he said, “smartphones will keep growing in sales whilst PC sales remain stagnant”. In fact, during the last 3 months of 2010, smartphones outsold PCs for the first time, shipping an impressive 100 million units worldwide.

It’s easy to see why. Software developers are making it easy to access our documents, hold our meetings and even do our shopping, no matter where we are or what we’re doing.

Shopping is a prime example of an area where smartphones have taken a considerable bite out of the PC market. Online shopping has been transformed by apps and websites, all custom designed to fit on devices that we carry around in our pockets. Online payment firm PayPal estimates that over $7 billion will be spent using smartphones in 2012 alone!

New technology has also shaped the way that smartphones can replace PCs for certain business functions. Developments in Bluetooth technology make it easy to make conference calls and attend virtual meetings on the move. There are some great Nokia Bluetooth products on the market allowing you to do this, especially the range of wireless Bluetooth speakers and headsets, which make it simple to communicate without the need for a computer.

It’s not all about functionality either. Why carry a large laptop around in a heavy bag when you can have the latest smartphone, complete with funky and stylish accessories? The accessories market is booming and you can get everything from cases to headphones, which let you kit out your phone and stand out from the crowd.

Some of the latest Nokia accessories are made with style in mind, whether you’re looking for stylish leather pouches or comically themed cases. There’s also an interesting range of headphones for smartphones, specifically designed by Monster – producers of Dr. Dre’s headphone range.

With all the features and accessories out there, there’s never been a better time to join the smartphone revolution.
